Artist Statement,

This body of works demonstrates my need for perfection. It demonstrates my use of taking a concept and expressing visually that’s outside the ordinary. It also exemplifies my risk taking with materials. Art is my outlet for deep emotional expression.

Over the years I have developed a much stronger use of value. My attention to detail is even more precise as well as my attention to proportion. I’ve experimented with mark making to describe form and my use of color, as opposed to black and white. Overall my work is generally about content, the bigger idea or a deeper meaning. Sometimes my work is literal and other times metaphoric or left for interpretation. Normally, before I get to actual drawing and producing work, I come up with a very “fleshed out” (very in depth) idea or I have a very deep, personal issue I want to “talk” about.  I outline what I want to do and I jump right in. I pay very specific attention to detail and that technique normally seduces me. If the piece doesn’t look well blended and “perfect” I will throw it away and start over.

My process, in more depth starts off in my head as I explained. “A very complex” idea. I then decide my use of material that I feel will best convey my purpose for the piece. Next, the real work begins, I never start with a rough sketch or light sketch, I just jump right in with bold dark lines and very rendered value. Depending on how I feel when the piece is “finished” I’ll go back and refine the lines, add color, or whatever I feel will give me satisfaction as being complete.

Ideas that I talk about are childhood memories, loved ones, community issues, global issues, and everyday life. On the other hand, Influences can be as small as daydreams and as big as death. my influences motivate and influence me to make a statement, change a viewpoint, or to just feel good about myself.
